Sunday, August 18

Hi all! We're back from our Suzhou-Shanghai trip and wrapping up the FSP as we head into our last week of classes, ending on Tuesday.

Suzhou is most famous for its gardens. In fact, Suzhou's gardens have historically served as the models for the rest of China. Thus, Beijing's Summer Palace draws directly on elements found in Suzhou-style gardens. We visited only two gardens--the Humble Administrator's Garden and Lion's Grove. These gardens are usually considered must-see sites of Suzhou, and the students were pleasantly surprised by the gardens' carefully planned layout and landscaping, which often included juxtaposition of plants, rock, water and architecture to create a calming and enjoyable environment like something out of a painting. We also visited Tiger Hill, so named because the topography of the hill resembles the shape of a lion. The famous leaning Tiger Hill Pagoda represents the tiger's tail. The Suzhou Silk Museum was also on our itinerary, which also serves as a working factory that produces silk clothing and comforters that are sold in its extensive shop.

We arrived in Shanghai on Saturday night. After dinner together, the students were free to explore the city on their own. The next day, we explored the Shanghai Museum, China's premiere treasure trove of bronzes, jade, paintings and sculptures. Even three hours of touring was inadequate to fully see all 11 galleries. Especially impressive were the bronze and painting galleries, which seemed to extend forever. After a final dinner we took the brand new Maglev (magnetic levitation) train to the airport to catch our flight, which, unfortunately, wound up being delayed 2 hours due to inclement weather.

Now back home safe and sound, the students have just finished giving their final presentations in Professor Mowry's class and are enjoying their final weekend together in the city. Coming up are the students' commencement lunch and a dinner in honor of the professors for a term of great instruction. Till next time!
